1 teen hurt, another dies after LaVilla minibike, dump truck crash
JACKSONVILLE, FL – A 13-year-old boy operating a minibike sustained minor wounds, and his passenger — a 14-year-old boy — died after they collided with a dump truck Thursday.
This collision happened before 1 p.m. in the 100 block of South Myrtle Street in LaVilla, First Coast News reported. An eyewitness, a driver of a minivan, was traveling behind the dump truck and said the driver of the garbage truck reduced their speed to turn right on Harper Street.
As the truck driver turned, the two teenage boys sped on the right side along the truck and had crashed into its passenger side. The boys were then thrown from the bike.
First responders rushed the 14-year-old boy to an area hospital, where he died.
Authorities also said the 13-year-old boy sustained minor wounds and is in stable condition. It is unclear if he was sent to an area hospital.
The truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officials confirmed that impairment was not a contributing factor.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the bike did not have any “right, left turn signals, a headlight and a tail light.” They also revealed it was not authorized to be on the road since it is deemed an “off-highway vehicle.”
