6 dead, 1 critically hurt after train, SUV crash in Plant City
PLANT CITY, FL – Three adults and three juveniles died, and a 23-year-old man is in critical condition after a collision between an SUV and a train Sunday.
Bay News 9 said the wreck happened before 7 p.m. Hillsborough County deputies indicated that the driver of the SUV went onto the railroad crossing as the train approached. The conductor attempted to honk his horn to warn the vehicle to move.
However, the attempt did not work, as the SUV was reported to have “catapulted” and overturned many times.
The driver, 52-year-old Jose Hernandez, and front passenger — 23-year-old Guillermo E. Gama III — were taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital. Hernandez succumbed to fatal injuries there.
The others who passed away were said to have been 22-year-old Aniella Hernandez, 50-year-old Enedelia Hernandez, a 17-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl, and a 9-year-old boy.
Our newsroom is working to find out more details of this fatal wreck and has declined to mention the names of the 17-year-old teenagers and 9-year-old boy in this article due to their statuses as juveniles.
