Bus Stop Safety Tips

BusAcci

Earlier this year, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that sadly, three people had to be taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a car accident happened at a bus stop. The weekday accident reportedly occurred after a two-vehicle collision sent a car into the Fort Lauderdale bus stop. The force of the impact between a minivan and a BMW apparently flung the BMW into the bus stop and into two people who were sitting on the bus stop bench. Both the two women on the bus bench and one of the people in one of the vehicles were subsequently taken to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment.

Safety Tips For Walking to the Bus Stop

Whether it is a city-run public bus or a school bus, there are certain steps we can undertake to help ensure the safety of ourselves and our loved ones while walking to and from the bus stop. Of note, it has been determined that some methods of public transportation can actually be safer than driving in a vehicle. However, the first step is making sure that you make it to the bus stop in the first place. While walking, keep the following safety tips in mind:

  • Ensuring you leave with enough time to not be in a rush
  • Walking on sidewalks and using crosswalks whenever available
  • Walking close to any small children who are accompanying you
  • Looking both ways before entering the street to retrieve any items you happen to drop there while walking

Other Things to Watch Out For While Waiting at the Bus Stop

While you may have minimal control over any vehicle that happens to leave the road and head toward a bus stop you’re waiting at, paying attention to your surroundings can help you manage to escape if you find yourself facing this unfortunate scenario. In addition, there are other dangers that you should keep an eye out for in addition to motorists. These include:

  • Suspicious people who are behaving oddly
  • Random people who offer to give you a ride
  • Unusual packages left at the stop, such as packages with wires or leaking fluid
  • Weapons
  • Unfamiliar and aggressive wild or domestic animals

If you witness activity that appears to be criminal in nature or could pose harm to you or someone else, you should distance yourself from the scene and alert authorities. And if you find yourself injured because of someone else’s negligence, you should reach out for legal help.
