58-year-old Valrico man killed in crash on Selmon Expy.
TAMPA, FL – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash that occurred on the Selmon Expressway in Tampa on Thursday morning. The driver, a 58-year-old man from Valrico, died after his vehicle crashed off the highway and ended up in the parking lot of an adjacent apartment complex.
According to Fox 13, the crash occurred at around 10 a.m. on the exit ramp to Gandy Boulevard. According to FHP, the driver was heading west on the exit ramp when he failed to negotiate the curve, left the roadway, and struck two traffic sign support poles, a light pole, and the guardrail. The vehicle then traveled underneath the guardrail before crashing into the fence surrounding the Lighthouse Apartment.
The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle and died at the scene. Tampa police have not publicly identified him.
Troopers and Tampa police officers closed the eastbound upper deck Gandy exit for several hours as they investigated the crash. Tampa officials said the fence surrounding the apartment complex prevented the vehicle from traveling any further.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
