1 hospitalized after Miami wrong-way crash on Florida’s Turnpike
MIAMI, FL – A man was sent to the hospital after hitting another vehicle traveling the wrong way on Florida’s Turnpike Friday.
The collision took place near the Hard Rock Stadium near the SW 99th St. exit, WSVN reported. For reasons unclear, a driver of a white Chevy Camaro was driving north on the southbound lanes when he collided with a silver Toyota Pickup truck.
The driver of the pickup truck, who was identified as Michael Calix, stopped right in front of the concrete barrier.
Calix sustained minor injuries – a few bruises. Calix said that when he saw the Chevy driver approaching him, he pulled over to the right side, and the driver mirrored him, doing the same when he moved over to the left side. The Chevy driver then struck Calix’s truck. Calix”s vehicle sustained minor damage, while the Chevy itself was completely destroyed.
The Chevy driver was pinned inside his vehicle, and it took medics half an hour to extricate him due to his “combative” response.
It is unclear if impairment played a role in the collision. Florida Highway Patrol is investigating this detail and additional information.
