Woman, man killed in crash with Cape Coral canal
CAPE CORAL, FL – An 88-year-old woman and a 94-year-old man struck a palm tree, went off course, and then crashed into a canal before succumbing to fatal wounds Sunday.
This single-vehicle collision was reported before 2:30 p.m. on 4323 Kismet Parkway. A preliminary report said that the driver and passenger were approaching a cul-de-sac, an end-of-the-road pathway, according to NBC-2.
Along Kismet Parkway, there are three left individual arrow signs that advise drivers of the end of the road and an upcoming canal. The only way to avoid the end of the road and the canal altogether is to pursue a U-turn. Despite these advisory signs, the driver declined to make a U-turn and continued forward, leading them to crash their car into the canal.
The car occupants were identified as Marilyn Palmer Cooper and Howard Walter Cooper, a married couple. It is unclear whether it was Marilyn or Howard who drove. Officials did, however, confirm that the motorist was not impaired, and did not speed.
Cape Coral officials started an investigation and have not provided more information.
