Church van slams into Fort Myers home, injuring 2 kids
FORT MYERS, FL – A 78-year-old man driving a church van had plowed into a house located on Braman Avenue, injuring the two children inside the home Tuesday.
According to NBC-2, Fort Myers police suspect the driver had a “vehicle malfunction,” which led him to unintentionally slam into the house, damaging a significant portion of the home.
Footage showed that the van (from the First Haitian Baptist Church and Christian Academy in Fort Myers) crashed into a bedroom. Before first responders arrived at the scene, a good samaritan was able to help the children escape, as was the driver, whose vehicle was locked.
Officers will not be citing the man since he had no ill will and because the collision was not pursued intentionally. That man, despite having no significant injuries and being seen walking after this wreck, wanted to seek medical attention at a hospital.
Police did not confirm if the man was transported via an ambulance or by means of a personal vehicle.
While police did not specify the physical condition of the two kids inside the house, they did say an ambulance took them to a hospital as a precaution.
In addition, the Florida Community Development Department said that the home’s structural integrity is compromised, forcing the residents to evacuate and find another living space.
