DUI suspect arrested following fatal crash at west Tampa intersection
TAMPA, FL – A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged last Friday, July 12, for his alleged role in a west Tampa crash that claimed the life of a passenger late last month, reports Tampa Bay Times.
The fatal accident happened in the 1900 block of North Mabry Highway on June 22, shortly before 3:30 a.m.
Tampa Police say the suspect was driving a Chrysler Pacifica when he neglected to observe a Volkswagen Jetta that was slowing down as it approached a red light. Moments later, the Chrysler hit and overturned the Jetta before going on to strike a Chrysler Town and Country that was waiting at the lighted intersection.
A woman who was traveling in the rear passenger seat of the Jetta succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Three other people from the same car were transported to an area hospital for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, but have all since been released.
No one in the Town and Country was reported hurt.
The driver of the Chrysler, who was suspected of impairment at the scene, was subjected to a blood draw after police obtained a warrant. His toxicology results indicate his blood alcohol content was 0.126, 1.5 times in excess of the state’s legal limit.
Officials say the suspect was booked into Orient Road Jail without bond after turning himself in. An investigation remains open and ongoing.
