Alleged DUI driver hits, sends teen to hospital in Hillsborough Co.
TAMPA, FL – A 19-year-old male teenager was hospitalized for serious wounds after standing along his disabled car when he was struck by an allegedly impaired driver on Sunday.
WTSP said this crash happened on I-275 North when the suspected DUI driver — 23-year-old Dane Jones — lost control of his vehicle amid rainy weather conditions.
Jones struck the teenage boy, forcing him to go over the barrier wall. The latest update indicated the teenager (whose name was undisclosed) was last recovering at a hospital.
Tampa Police and Florida Highway Patrol (who responded to the scene) did not specify if Jones was injured. However, officials did confirm they arrested Jones for “DUI serious injury, DUI property damage and driving with a suspended license involving serious injury.”
Police shut down the I-275 North and MLK Jr. Boulevard as well as the southbound I-275 and Hillsborough Avenue interchange to accommodate the investigation process and scene clearance procedure.
