Avoiding Road Rage Collisions
According to a recent news report by Local 10 News, one Florida mother is pleading for the public’s help in the hopes that someone will come forward with information about a road rage shooting incident that tragically ended with her son losing his life. Based on reports from local authorities, the young man was a passenger in a pickup truck that a coworker was driving as they were both on their way home from work following a night shift. Investigators have stated that the driver accidentally cut in front of another pickup at an intersection in Sunrise at which point surveillance video indicates that the suspect vehicle, a newer model full-size pickup, began to follow the other truck. Multiple shots were fired from the truck a short time later and one of the rounds went through the back window of the vehicle the young man was riding in, striking him in the head. The suspect vehicle fled the scene and while the young man was rushed to Broward Health, he unfortunately did not survive. Sadly, the young man was killed just one day before his 21st birthday.
The Tragic Results of Road Rage
We have all ended up behind a driver who did something that irritated us. In fact, eight in ten drivers reportedly experience road rage. However, aggressive behavior is never a good idea when it’s combined with drivers who are navigating the roadways. Unfortunately, over one-third of road rage cases involve firearms and approximately 30 murders are attributed to road rage every year. Even when weapons and homicide aren’t factors, the danger is still present. Two out of every three traffic fatalities occur due to aggressive driving. In addition, while 94 percent of traffic accidents occur due to human error, almost a third of these are directly linked to road rage.
Avoiding Road Rage Behaviors
As with any type of factor that contributes to motor vehicle accidents, drivers should take necessary safety precautions to reduce the risk of collisions that occur because of road rage. The first step is understanding the behaviors that should be avoided behind the wheel. These include:
- Tailgating
- Improper or erratic lane changing
- Cutting others off
- Not using turn signals
- Driving on medians, road shoulders or other prohibited areas
- Rapidly accelerating and decelerating
- Racing
- Mentally or verbally cursing other drivers
- Ignoring bad weather
- Honking
- Flashing your headlights
- Braking frequently
