Driver causes Fort Myers Shores home to catch on fire
FORT MYERS SHORES, FL – A driver was responsible for hitting two trees and crashing into a Fort Myers Shores home, leading the SUV and the home to catch fire.
This incident happened on 5th Street around 5:30 a.m. Monday, NBC-2 reported. The SUV driver — a 33-year-old man from Lehigh Acres — was able to escape the burning SUV. It is unclear if he was impaired or speeding at the time of the collision. Florida Highway Patrol only indicated that the driver was charged with reckless driving and taken to a hospital for unspecified injuries.
The home’s occupants — Dennis and Brenda Keene — were sleeping and were not made aware of the fire until their neighbor, Renne Sincerbox, banged at their door.
Dennis and Brenda were able to evacuate quickly, and Renne’s husband Gary used his hose to try and put out the fire. It appears fire crews were able to extinguish the flames, and the Kenne’s home was left burnt and charred; the blinds melted. It is unclear if the Keenes were displaced.
No one except for the SUV driver was injured.
