Elderly married couple killed in hit-and-run in Hialeah
HIALEAH, FL – A married couple in their 80s passed away after they were struck by a driver who fled the scene and was later found and arrested Sunday.
The hit-and-run suspect, identified as 47-year-old Susej Calcines, was traveling south on East Eighth Avenue at 7 p.m. when she struck the couple walking on their way to play the lotto, WSVN reports.
When authorities arrived at the collision site, they declared the couple dead at the scene. They have since been identified as 84-year-old Manuela and 87-year-old Julio Hernandez.
Calcines, operating a black Mercedes, did not stop or render aid and continued driving. A short time later, Miami-Dade Police found Calcines and the described vehicle. She admitted to operating the vehicle and was arrested. She was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a collision and two counts of vehicular homicide.
Calcines did have a valid driver’s license and confirmed she had a clean driving record and has not been involved in previous crashes prior.
