Fatal crashes in Mariner caused by impairment, police say
CAPE CORAL, FL – Impairment played a role in two separate collisions that claimed two lives in the Mariner district over this Father’s Day weekend, Cape Coral Police revealed.
NBC-2 said the first crash happened on Southwest Pine Island Road around 8:15 p.m. on Friday, June 16th. A 54-year-old man, who was later identified as Dmitriy Simankin, collided head-on with another motorist – a 19-year-old man.
The 19-year-old man, whose name was not released, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while Simankin was pinned inside his vehicle, extricated, and sent to a hospital where he later died.
The second fatal crash took place on the 326th block of Kismet Parkway West around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 18th. A driver did not reduce his speed, leading him to crash into a parked box truck with flashing hazard lights. The man – Pablo Perez Viera – was transported to Gulf Coast Hospital where he suffered fatal injuries.
There were no occupants inside the truck at the time of the collision, as they were unloading furniture. They, nonetheless, were spared from harm.
