Helicopter crash in Pompano Beach claims two lives
POMPANO BEACH, FL – A 65-year-old woman and a Broward County fire rescue personnel, a 50-year-old man, lost their lives when a rescue helicopter struck an apartment building.
This fatal wreck happened in the area of Northwest 10th Street and Dixie Highway on Monday, Local 10 reported. Officials said the Broward County fire rescue helicopter spun after its tail broke.
The tail rammed into an apartment building, killing the woman and the 50-year-old man.
First responders identified the woman as Lurean Wheaton and the man as Terryson Jackson, a Broward County Sheriff Fire Rescue Captain.
There were two other men in the helicopter. They were identified as 31-year-old Mike Chaguaceda, a passenger, and 37-year-old Daron Roche, a pilot. Both managed to escape out of the burning building and helped other residents evacuate.
Chaguaceda and Roche and two men, residents of the apartment building, were sent to a hospital for unspecified injuries.
