I-95 Crashes Outside Of Jacksonville Leaves One Dead, Others Sent To Area Hospital
The Florida Highway Patrol and St. Augustine police report a series of crashes on I-95 between Jacksonville and St. Augustine that killed one and sent others to the hospital with serious injuries. Three separate accidents in a five-hour period left the interstate a scene of death and destruction, sending auto accident victims to hospitals and creating massive congestion.
Our thoughts and prayers at The Pendas Law Firm go out to the victims and their families. The personal injury and auto accident lawyers of our law office know all too well the tragic and senseless loss of life serious auto accidents may befall on injury victims.
Three accidents in five hours
The first accident of the day occurred on January 21st at around 8 AM when a work vehicle overturned near County road 210 in St. John’s County. Traffic was delayed while crews worked to clear debris scattered across the highway.
The second, and fatal accident, took place around 10 AM when an 18-wheeler slammed into the back of a Honda CRV slowing down in traffic. The force of the accident caused both vehicles to veer off the interstate into International Golf Parkway, striking a tree. The Honda driver was pronounced dead at the scene, the passenger was taken to University of Florida Health Jacksonville.
The third accident took place around 12:30 PM near State Road 16 and involved five vehicles. One driver was hurt so badly she was airlifted to UF Health Jacksonville in serious condition. Several others sustained minor injuries and were taken to area hospitals.
Jacksonville crash hotspots
Police call the area where the accidents took place a “crash hotspot.” In 2015, authorities reported over 500 accidents and two deaths occurred on I-95 in St. John’s County. Florida Highway Patrol blame most of the crashes on aggressive and careless driving.
Interdiction and enforcement by authorities can only go so far to prevent needless tragedies like the series of wrecks that occurred on I-95 in late January 2016. So long as drivers refuse to follow the law and drive in a safe and reasonable manner to keep fellow drivers from being placed in dangerous situations, there may always exist the possibility of serious, life-changing injuries.
