Pittsburgh Mother Visiting Port Charlotte Killed While Pushing Infant In Stroller
A 35-year-old woman from Pittsburgh was recently killed in a tragic accident while pushing her infant son in a stroller along Appleton Boulevard in Port Charlotte. The accident took place shortly after 7 am when the victim and her child were struck from behind near an intersection near Bay State Drive, sending the two pedestrians onto a nearby grassy nole.
The mother was taken to Englewood Hospital. The deceased was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital and the child was treated at Bayfront Health hospital in St. Petersburg for serious injuries, including a broken collarbone and broken ribs. The driver, a 55-year-old Port Charlotte local, was not harmed in the crash.
There was no sidewalk along the road where victims were struck and no charges have been filed against the driver in the case. The deceased leaves behind two children and a husband, all of whom were in Port Charlotte on vacation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this senseless tragedy.
Area Residents Demand Safety Issues Be Addressed
Following the accident, an outpour of sympathy flowed from local residents and those who lived and worked near the victim. Many Floridians took to social media and expressed outrage about the continued lack of sidewalk areas along busy streets, including one whose friend’s three children were all recently struck by cars.
While many municipalities may lament they do not have the necessary funding to complete these projects, federal programs are available to assist local governments. In December 2015, President Obama signed the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act) which “maintains funding for Safe Routes to School, bicycling and walking improvements and provides a small increase in funding for the Transportation Alternatives Program.”
