Preventing Daycare Tragedies
We all love our children who are undoubtedly the smallest and most precious members of our family. However, as much as we would love to stay home with them, most of us also have to find a daycare for them so that we can work and earn a living to support them and give them the best possible life.
Daycare centers are meant to be safe environments while you are at work and they exist solely to take care of your child while you pursue other endeavors in support of furthering your family. But what happens when they get this wrong? And can you do anything to help avoid one of these tragedies?
What Example of This Kind of Tragedy Was Recently in the News?
The South Florida Sun Sentinel recently reported that investigators have uncovered that the West Park home where a 2-month-old died in early September was an unlicensed day care. According to the report, one of the two caregivers known to have been in the house had given the infant a bottle and burped him in the morning before putting him down for a nap in an adult bed with a pacifier. The caregiver reportedly checked on him during his nap. But tragically, when the caregiver tried to wake him up about four hours later for a feeding, he did not respond. It remains unclear how many children were in the house when this tragedy happened but Broward County officials are investigating the status of the home. The state Department of Children and Families has already revealed that there were two previous reports related to one of the caregivers from 2012 and 2014.
Tips for Choosing a New Daycare
According to the Centers for Disease Control, every year more than 12,000 young people die from unintentional injuries and more than nine million are treated in emergency departments for nonfatal injuries. However, it’s not always easy to determine what actually caused a young child’s personal injury or wrongful death and sadly, this can be especially true in cases involving the potential negligence of a daycare. This, in addition to the desire to keep your loved one safe, is why it is better to avoid this kind of tragedy in the first place. While you don’t have control over many of the day-to-day happenings at a daycare, you do have control over the daycare that you select – and this can be one of your strongest strengths. When choosing a new daycare, contemplate the following:
- Do a preliminary search online by googling the facility.
- Tour the facility, especially if the facility is a private home.
- Check whether the facility is properly licensed and accredited by local and state authorities.
- Don’t be afraid to change your mind if it doesn’t feel right.
