Teen killed, 3 others critically injured in crash off I-95 in Brevard County
BREVARD COUNTY, FL – An 18-year-old Merritt Island resident lost his life Sunday morning, July 21, as a result of a collision on Interstate 95 in Brevard County that seriously hurt three other teenagers, reports ClickOrlando.
The fatal accident occurred at mile marker 165, near St. Johns Heritage Parkway, at about 10:30 a.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Merritt Island man was driving a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder southbound on I-95 when he overcorrected to the right, causing the vehicle to travel off the right side of the roadway, cross the entire southbound highway, and then roll multiple times before coming to rest on the outside shoulder.
Officials said none of the four occupants were wearing a seatbelt at the time, and all four were ejected during the crash.
First responders pronounced the male driver deceased at the scene. His three passengers, two 18-year-old Cocoa women and a 17-year-old boy from Merritt Island, were all rushed to an area hospital with critical injuries.
Crews had all traffic diverted onto St. Johns Heritage Parkway following the crash, but by 2:00 a.m., all travel lanes had reopened.
An investigation remains in progress.
