The Risks and Causes of Rollerblading Accidents
The South Florida Sun Sentinel has asserted in a grim recounting that a 27-year-old young woman was struck by an SUV and killed while she was rollerblading along a Pompano Beach recreation path earlier this year. The driver is now facing a dozen charges several months after the incident. According to the arrest report, the 26-year-old Lauderdale Lakes resident was speeding at a rate of 96 mph when he lost control of the 2007 Nissan Murano he was driving and fatally struck the victim before hitting a tree. The force of the impact caused the SUV to split in half and both the driver and his passenger had to be taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Sadly, the rollerblading victim died at the scene of the collision.
The driver was going more than 60 mph over the posted speed limit at the time of the accident, and results from blood samples taken at the hospital showed he had a blood alcohol level of .17. Shockingly, this means he was more than twice the legal limit of .08 at the time of impact.
The Risks of Rollerblading
Here in the Sunshine State, the many months of warm weather we experience year-round means that participation in outdoor sports such as rollerblading is popular among both the young and the young at heart. Rollerblading can come with an adrenaline rush, a sense of euphoria, and even bring back a bit of childhood joy and innocence. With that being said, this seemingly harmless activity can also be excessively dangerous. The Inline Skating Resource Center has published data originally analyzed by the Consumer Products Safety Commission which indicates that inline skating (which rollerblading falls under) had an injury rate of 3.4 per 1000 participants.
The Causes of Rollerblading Accidents
Rollerblading accidents can occur for a variety of reasons, all of which have the potential to result in serious skating injuries. These reasons can include:
- Defective products
- Poorly constructed sidewalks and roads
- Negligent drivers
