The Tragic Results of Golf Cart Car Accidents
According to the National Golf Foundation, there were golf courses in 209 of the world’s 249 countries as of the end of last year. And here the United States, many of these courses and the accompanying golf carts are located right here in Florida. Whether you are a visitor of the Sunshine State or live here year-round, golf carts are a common sight. Between the abundant sunshine and warm climate, it is easy to understand why they are a tempting alternative to cars, especially when factoring in that they are also comparatively environmentally friendly and cheaper to buy and maintain. But unfortunately, when cars collide with golf carts and accidents result, tragedies often follow.
What Example of a Golf Cart Accident Tragedy Was Recently in the News?
Patch News recently reported that an 87-year-old Sun City Center man recently died at Tampa General Hospital from injuries sustained when his golf cart was struck by a car. Florida Highway Patrol has asserted that on a recent Saturday morning, the victim riding the golf cart was fatally injured after being struck by a 77-year-old when she ran a red light. Tragically, the victim had a green light at the time his golf cart was struck by the car, causing it to overturn and eject the man who later died from his injuries.
How Often Do Golf Cart Injuries Happen?
Unfortunately, accidents involving golf carts seem to be constantly on the rise both in Florida and throughout the United States. There are no golf cart accident records kept by the Florida Highway Patrol. However, data released by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System suggests that over 147,000 golf cart injuries occurred in the U.S. in just a sixteen year period. Perhaps surprisingly since many of them cannot operate golf carts, over 31 percent of these injuries occurred to children who were age 16 or younger. Additionally, over fifteen percent of these injuries occurred on streets or public property.
