Two Dead In 18-wheeler Crash In Belle Glade
A deadly crash on State Road 80 north of Belle Glade recently left two dead and another seriously wounded. The crash involved two 18-wheelers and a Mazda Millenia and shut down traffic on State Road 80 for almost seven hours.
Heading north on Sugar House Road, the Mazda did not see a tractor trailer approaching from the east. There are no lights or signals on that particular stretch of road, perhaps making it more difficult to see or avoid oncoming traffic.
The tractor-trailer t-boned the Mazda, crossed a grass median, and hit another tractor-trailer approaching from the west. The truck flipped over onto its roof, killing the driver. The Mazda was forced onto the shoulder of State Road 80.
The second 18-wheeler also flipped over onto the driver’s side, veered of the road, and burst into flames. The driver managed to escape the vehicle before it caught flames. He was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach in serious condition.
Dozens of crashes along stretch of highway
In a 15-mile area between Hooker and Connors highways, there have been 24 auto accidents since 2015. Four of those crashes turned out to be fatal. One of those accidents involved an 18-wheeler.
Conditions along the stretch of highway where the latest fatal accident took place make the road a hazard for travelers. Many of the lanes intersecting with State Road 80 are gravel roads. There are very few lights and no traffic signals.
West Palm Beach truck accident lawsuits
Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and families of those touched by this senseless tragedy. As a law firm regularly representing the legal interests of auto accidents, our lawyers know all too well the consequences catastrophic accidents can have on victims.
Fortunately, the law gives auto accident victims legal remedy to recover compensation for their damages. Under Florida’s auto insurance laws, the injured driver’s own insurance typically compensates them for property damage and medical bills.
However, in cases of serious injuries like disability or disfigurement, victims may be able to file auto accident lawsuits against the at-fault driver. Auto accident lawsuits can help victims recover compensation for:
- Lost wages while in recovery;
- Hospital bills;
- Medical expenses;
- Physical pain and suffering; and
- Mental anguish.
Often times, accidents involving huge commercial vehicles are caused by factors like careless driving on the part of the truck operator, negligent maintenance of the truck, or failure to adhere to state or federal safety standards.
