Two Pedestrians Hit by Car in Oakland Park
A mother and her teenaged son were recently hit by a car in Oakland Park after the driver lost control of his SUV. The driver and teenaged victim were transported to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale while the female victim was taken to Broward Health North in Pompano Beach.
The accident took place near Northeast 56th Street and North Dixie Highway. The mother and son were on the sidewalk when the driver jumped the curb and hit them. The driver then steered his car into a pole and hit another vehicle parked nearby.
Bystanders who witnessed the accident immediately responded by calling 911. No charges have been filed in the accident and the status of the victims is unknown at this point. All of us at The Pendas Law Firm wish all of the victims in this accident a speedy recovery.
Florida pedestrian accidents highest in the nation
This accident is just the latest in a series of pedestrian accidents plaguing Fort Lauderdale and the state of Florida as a whole. According to Florida’s Department of Transportation, the state accounts for 6 percent of the country’s population but 11 percent of all fatal pedestrian accidents.
It should come as no surprise to know Florida has the top four metropolitan areas on the list of most dangerous large metro areas for walking in the country. These areas include:
- Orlando-Kissimmee;
- Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater;
- Jacksonville; and
- Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach.
For years between 2007 – 2011, Broward County ranks second in Florida with the highest number of pedestrian fatalities. During that time, 215 victims lost their lives in auto accidents and hundreds more were hurt, some seriously.
Fort Lauderdale pedestrian accident lawsuits
Pedestrians hurt in auto accidents may be able to hold drivers responsible for their injuries by filing auto accident lawsuits. Drivers have a legal responsibility to drive safely and be aware of pedestrians and the law gives victims the legal remedy to recover for their damages and be made whole again.
Injury lawsuits can recover compensation for the victim’s medical bills, hospital expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and other damages. These lawsuits are often necessary as drivers often attempt to deny liability and their insurance companies may downplay the extent of injuries in an attempt to pay victims insufficient compensation.
