Update: FHP arrests hit-and-run suspect after deadly Wimauma wreck
WIMAUMA, FL – On Monday, Florida Highway Patrol arrested the hit-and-run suspect for fatally striking a 19-year-old man on a bicycle on Saturday, Nov. 16.
FHP told the Tampa Bay Times that the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Jaquelin Lopez Velasquez, a Mulberry resident, turned herself into the Tampa Florida Highway Patrol office on Monday and, in turn, was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail and will face criminal charges for fleeing the scene of a crash that resulted in death.
To recap, the collision happened before 8:30 p.m. on SR 674 East, west of 4th Street, when Lopez Velasquez, operating a 2011-2014 Red Dodge Charger with silver rims, hit the cyclist from Gueeamela, and then immediately drove off without rendering aid.
FHP said Lopez Velasquez left behind some vehicle parts from the front bumper, which they held onto as evidence to aid them with the investigation.
