Update: Undocumented immigrant arrested for fatal Mulberry crash
MULBERRY, FL – Officials have released more information regarding the fatal collision on SR-60 Tuesday.
The collision happened before 6 a.m. when the driver of the 2007 Ford Expedition was traveling west on SR 60 when he went into the path of a Chevrolet pickup truck, Bay News 9 reported. The driver of the Ford later told authorities that he saw the headlights of the Chevrolet approaching. He thought he could make it but could not and crashed with the truck.
The driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck, an 18-year-old woman, was transported to a hospital, where she is in stable condition.
One of the occupants from the Ford – a 33-year-old man – was pronounced dead at the scene, and another, a 62-year-old man, was taken to a hospital where he later died. Four other passengers were also hospitalized, where injuries ranged from stable to critical condition.
The driver of the Ford Expedition was identified as 24-year-old Elmer Bryan Giron-Canil, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala.
Giron-Canil was hospitalized for minor injuries and arrested and charged with causing injury or death while not having a driver’s license. He was taken to Polk County Jail.
